Franz Schubert

Biographical Summary
Born and raised in Vienna, Austria, Schubert was first introduced to music by his father. As a young boy he learned to play piano, violin and viola. By age eleven, he had received a scholarship to attend the musical preparatory school Stadtkovikt. There he was introduced to the famous composer Antonio Salieri who recognized Schubert’s talent as musical genius. By the age of twenty, Schubert had already written more than 100 songs as well as symphonic, operatic and chamber music scores.
Schubert is considered one of the greatest of the post classics, though his work only started to become popular until after his death. He is thought to be one of the originators of the romantic style and used was well known for the expression and emotion he put into his music. Schubert was a rather quiet, private man and struggled to support himself through teaching and composing.
Unfortunately Schubert lived the shortest life of any major composer and died of illness at the young age of 31. Though he lived a short life, he still managed to write over 600 songs as well as numerous symphonies and operas.

- Schubert focused mainly on songwriting and is most well known for his German art songs called lieds.
- He also composed many operas, symphonies and theatrical works.
