Aaron Copland
November 14, 1900 - December 2, 1990
America, Twentieth Century
Biographical Summary
At the age of 15, Aaron Copland knew he wanted to become a composer. His sister taught him to play the piano starting at a very young age. After high school, he studied under Nadia Boulanger in Paris, France. He composed for her, in America, the Symphony for Organ and Orchestra. He continued to compose by adjusting to the ages in America. In the mid 1930s, Copland tried to simplify music for the public. He also was a big promoter of American composers and work. Copland stopped composing in the mid-70s partly because of age and the lack of interest from the public. He continued to give lectures, though, through the mid-80s.
Copland was a very accomplished man playing music and writing books. He wrote magazine articles and there are biographies written about him as well as his own autobiography. Awards which Copland has won throughout his life include: the Pulitzer Prize, Academy Award, New York Music Critic’s Circle Award, Gold Medal of National Institute of Arts and Letters, Presidential Medal of Freedom, Howland Prize of Yale University as well as 30 honary degrees from different colleges. In addition to giving lectures, Copland was on the executive board of directors for League of Composers in his later years.
