Strings
D’Addario Preludes are great for younger students (grades 4-6) about $13/Violin, and $27/Viola, $50/Cello
Thomastik Dominants or D’Addario Pro Arte are a better string for more advanced students (graders 7-12) about $32/Violin, $50/Viola, $75/Cello
Do not buy “Red Label “ or ”Supersensitives” They cost a dollar or two less than the D’Addario Preludes, but are very difficult to bow and not a good string.
Rosin
For younger students anything will do, including the rosin that comes in the cardboard box and wood holder (sherman’s, etc…)
For more advanced students: Hill (about $6) is great.
Violin and Viola rosin are the same, but cello and bass rosin are different. Make sure that you buy rosin for YOUR instrument.
For Bass players: Pops ($7)
Shoulder Rests
Viva or Kun. They are a bit expensive ($20), but truly worth it. The viva’s come in some fun colors too!
